About the Artist
With distinctive vision and artist perception, Peter Grab has captured “The Land of Enchantment” in his paintings of the Southwest. Carrying forth the tradition set by the School of Taos during the early part of the Twentieth Century, his art captures with economy of brush strokes the special light and warmth of the adobes and landscapes in the high desert of mountainous New Mexico.
Peter Grab studied painting and drawing at the Art Center in Pasadena, California. He moved to new New Mexico in 1981, and has been fascinated by the extraordinary panorama that had captured the imagination of artists since military expeditions into the uncharted territory during the early Nineteenth Century. Carrying on the tradition of Catlin, Couse, Moran and other great artists before him, Grab conjures up New Mexican landscape scenes with accurately mixed colors applied with broad, spontaneous strokes.
His work has been featured in Southwest Profile and Art of the West magazines. Peter Grab has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout the Southwest.
Creative Process
I work in oil, mainly pleine aire. I try to express what I see in three values, light, dark and middle. After establishing that I work to refine that statement always holding to the original three values. I paint fast with energy, I find the more one analyzes the subject the less it appears.
On Artisan:
Artisans has always been a world class art store. I been buying supplies since it was at the canyon road location. The original owners Bill and Jack allowed me to trade a painting for art supplies and I’m happy to know that Ron now has it in his home. Not only does Artisans supply a great service but it supports the arts in ways that are not always apparent.
