”It’s all about angles.” Kevin stated. His eyes kept tracing the contour of the model’s face, while his right hand precisely operated the surgical scissors with the movement of an accurate cutting machine. He started cutting neck lines first, then curving up to chin, lips and nose. It was quite a magic. Six participants were captivated by Kevin Overhulser’s Freehand Silhouette Paper Portrait demo. Kevin explained the reason to put white paper underneath black paper(both about in 6 inches x 4 inches pieces); it is hard to see and difficult to cut if use only black paper. He also described about his own fascination of paper curving as “a reductive medium” which totally differs from other “additive mediums” like paints. Many attending artists agreed to his philosophy; “doing art is the reward for doing art” and it should be separated from financial reward.
