The Importance of Layers, with Ginnie Cappaert!
Demo in Review
Midwest Artist, Ginnie Cappaert, shared her thoughts and process on her art and the importance of layers in this well-attended demo. Ginnie stressed the importance of layers and the effects they can have on your artwork, no matter what medium you work in. Her medium of choice is oil/cold wax/dry pigments on wood board. Most of her work consists of up to 40 layers being added and removed to create the final minimalist, abstract landscape.
Here are the highlights of the demo:
1. Depth….by using thin layers (and many of them) you can easily create depth in your piece that you would never be able to get with just a few layers.
2. Value…an interesting value change can be created by working layers of pigment in different values either wet-into-wet or we-into dry surfaces.
3. Texture…is so important in Ginnie’s body of work and she accomplishes interesting textures through scraping, gouging, removing, scratching and more into each of the very thin layers that she applies to her work.
4. Color…is what Ginnie really thinks makes a piece of art ‘sing’! By using many thin layers of pigment you can achieve wonderful colors and variations.
5. Line….is often embedded into the layers of Ginnie’s work…with subtle hints of that line peeking through some of the finishing layers. This creates a subtle ‘graffiti like’ surface that keeps the eye traveling through the more minimalist work.
Ginnie firmly believes that the use of many layers in your work is what will set it above and apart from other artists works. Patience and Passion are needed!!!! Enjoy!
