EXPLORATION: NEW APPROACH With PanPastel and Claybord with Jessica Chao: August 15TH 2015

Jessica Chao introduced the non-traditional and contemporary techniques of creating beautiful layers and rich depth by combining PanPastel colors over the smooth surface of the Claybord. She demonstrated the application of several different colors of PanPastel by using chamois cloth, sponge based Sofft Tools and blending stomps to illuminate the similar effect like water color and its transparent characteristics. Jessica also showed scratching techniques after applying pigment by manipulating the surface with an etching needle. And further application to the surface was demonstrated by erasing the PanPastel pigment and pulling highlights. These techniques are very similar to the applications you would perform on drawings, paintings, and even printmaking. Jessica also showed the artists how to fix down layers of the pastels using workable fixative and then sealing the entire finished piece with final fixative for a lasting surface treatment. This finishing technique encourages pastel artists to creatively display their pastel works without hiding it under glass and instead displaying the artwork similar to that of gallery stretched canvas. All 14 attending artists enjoyed the hands-on demo and created awesome little pieces of their own.

Here are some of the positive feedbacks: “It was very informative and helpful, thank you, Jessica!”
“I can use these techniques for my under-painting!”
“I would probably try them with wood panels.”
“Developing layers on a canvas by using these techniques can be really interesting…” and so on…

Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jessica Chao received her bachelors of fine arts at the University of New Mexico. Whilst remaining active in the artistic community, Jessica has been consistently and
earnestly developing an aesthetic through various mediums; be they drawing, painting, lithographic, linocut, or sculptural techniques. A multiplicity of skill sets are used to translate her constant interest in the realm of dark arts into the vacillating semblances of macabre imagery and uncanny familiar of everyday imagery. Balancing digestible and appealing bright palette colors with distorted, spliced objects, Jessica’s work can be described as forebodingly unnerving, yet subtly engaging of an audience with an eye for detailed intricacy.
